Jackie & Ryan

3.5/5 Stars

Summary: “A modern day train hopper fighting to become a successful musician, and a single mom battling to maintain custody of her daughter, defy their circumstances by coming together in a relationship that may change each others lives forever.”

I debated whether or not to give this movie 3.5 or 4 stars, probably for longer than I really should have.  Jackie & Ryan is a nice movie, not great but worth watching.  It’s more about little moments coming together to make a movie rather than the big picture, which I know is not for everyone.  I liked the characters and cared about their different stories.  From the beginning, I wasn’t exactly sure where the movie was going to go.  There seemed to be a few different plots that it could’ve followed and it was interesting to see how it went.

I enjoyed the movie up until the ending, which was completely unsatisfying.  That is what made me decided on 3.5 over 4.  I get not having a “traditional” ending, actually the way they did it was fine.  The problem was that it came at the wrong moment.  There was still so much of the story untold.  Jackie’s divorce plot line was never resolved, and it had been what she was working towards for the entire movie!  Another scene or two towards the end to give it some kind of closure, would’ve made the movie so much better.

On top of that, while I liked the scenes with Virginia/Cowboy, it didn’t feel like they were necessary. The ending of that arch had no impact on the story, it could have been tied in more and made it actually meaningful.

If you’re looking for a light romance movie, it’s worth the watch.  Especially if you’re into music, the soundtrack was pretty nice.

As usual, let me know what you thought!

Available on Netflix.
